The saman was superior (P>0,05) to jurema branca in the variables: root length (RL) shoot (APL), dry weight of the root (DWR) and stem (PST), and foliate area (FA), in all the evaluation ages. Nevertheless, that the cellular volume in the 'plantagil' () was seemingly small, the RL of jurema branca reached the maximum value at 6.6 months, while the RL and the optimal LPA of saman exceeded 8 months. This way, the results of LR and LPA of both legumes for transplant in the field were different to the recommended ones in other studies, which are usually of4 months. The effects of shading in the LPA of the jurema branca seedlings were obtained with the biggest levels in this treatment, indicatting that a shading of 50% and 70% benefited the LPA of this legume, while a shading of 50% provided the highest LPA in samán. Thehighest values in AF in both legumes were found in the level of 50% shading. The correlations of Pearson showed that inside the six studied variables, shading affected the LPA of jurema branca and samán, and the AF of samán. The highest values for RAF (rate between AF and the total weight - PSR+PST+PSF) within each evaluation age were obtained for both species when they grew in the highest level of shading. There were no observed shading effects in the nodulation of the legumes, nevertheless, the samán nodules were five times heavier than those of jurema branca.
